Kam Kaj doesn't believe in passing false information on to its readers and customers. We believe in adopting strict journalistic integrity when it comes to handling sensitive data. That's why, we are telling you that absolutely no antibiotics kill coronavirus. Yes, that's right! Antibiotics don't work against COVID-19. If you want to prevent or treat this disease, you can't use antibiotics at all. This is a fact that is being repeatedly propagated by World Health Organizations.
Why Can't Antibiotics Kill Coronavirus?
In other words, why don't antibiotics kill coronavirus? 'Cause of a very simple reason. SARS-CoV-2 is a virus and antibiotics only work against bacteria. There is a huge difference between viruses and bacteria. Bacteria (singular: bacterium) are unicellular organisms. On other hand, a virus isn't made up of cell/s and doesn't fall into any of the five kingdoms of living creatures (basic biology much?). Bacteria are living things but we're not sure if viruses are alive or dead. That's why we use vaccines to prevent them and antivirals to treat them.
So, what you have just learnt is that you need antivirals to kill coronavirus, not antibacterials.
Why Are Antibacterials Being Used To Treat COVID-19?
It's because, sometimes, some patients develop some sort of bacterial infection after being infected with coronavirus. Again, no antibiotics kill coronavirus but there have been tests in France proving that some antibacterials have improved the patients' condition. Azithromycin (Zithromax) used with hydroxychloroquine has been quite effective.
Also, doctors are using acetaminophen and ibuprofen to treat patients' pain and fever. WHO first preferred former over latter but now it is of this opinion that both drugs has the same result.
Are There Any Antivirals To Kill SARS-CoV-2?
Sadly, no. It means that, currently, no specific antiviral exists that targets coronavirus. Antivirals work by stopping the reproductive cycle of a virus. Therefore, they kill that virus without killing its host (the human). But, because coronavirus was discovered just last year in December, we haven't been able to develop an antiviral for this germ.
Do Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine Kill Coronavirus?
If we don't believe antibiotics kill coronavirus, can chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine do the job?
Well, these drugs have successfully fought SARS-CoV-2 in laboratories. That's how they work: (1) They prevent virus from attaching itself to the cell and enter it. (2) If virus has entered, they kill it before it multiplies. But the tests done in France with these drugs were limited and inconclusive. Yet, again, as we don't claim that antibiotics kill coronavirus, we also have a lot of research to do about antivirals.
Does Remdesivir Kill Coronavirus?
Remdesivir is an antiviral drug that has awakened the interest among scientists. As COVID-19 is similar to SARS and MERS pandemics, people thought remdesivir would be effective against it. Remdesivir has been used to treat Ebola (which is not a coronavirus).
SARS-CoV-2 has a special enzyme that these germs use to multiply. Remdesivir stops these enzymes from working and inhibits the virus' ability to reproduce. Multiple tests are underway right now both in China and in United States. The Chinese tests will be concluded in April/May and we will get to know for sure whether this drug is actually useful against COVID-19 or not.
